Joe Pye weed
Eutrochium maculatum 'Gateway'
Saved on Itty Island · Fall 2026 · West 24th St & 10th Ave ·
The tallest plant on the island and the one people stop for. Big dusty-mauve flower domes in late summer, covered in butterflies and bees. We leave the seed heads standing all winter for the birds. These seeds came from them.

How to grow Joe Pye weed from seed Five steps, mostly waiting.
Give it a winter
Sow outside in a pot or in the ground between November and February. Freezing nights break the seed's dormancy for you.
Or fake one in the fridge
Mix the seed with a spoonful of damp, not wet, sand or vermiculite in a labeled zip bag. Refrigerate for 60 days, starting in January.
Sow on the surface
Press the seed onto moist seed-starting mix. Don't bury it; it needs light to germinate.
Warm and bright
Around 70°F in good light, kept evenly moist. Sprouts in two to three weeks.
Plant out in spring
After the last frost (mid-April in New York), in sun and soil that stays moist. Give it room. Expect flowers the second summer.
These were saved from our 'Gateway' plant and pollinated by whoever visited it, so seedlings may vary a little from the parent in height or color.

Questions Questions about growing Joe Pye weed.
Is Joe Pye weed native to New York?
Yes. Eutrochium maculatum is native across the Northeast, including New York, where it grows wild in damp meadows and along streams.
Do Joe Pye weed seeds need cold stratification?
Yes. They need about 60 days of cold and moisture to sprout. Sow outside between November and February, or keep the seed in damp sand in the fridge for 60 days.
How long until it flowers from seed?
Usually the second summer. The first year goes into roots and leaves.
Can it grow in a small city garden?
Ours grows on a 5×10 ft traffic median next to a bike lane. Give it sun, room to reach 4–6 ft, and water in dry spells.
Can I plant Joe Pye weed in a tree pit?
We'd skip it. It likes steady moisture and grows 4–6 ft tall, which can block sightlines on a sidewalk. It's happier in a backyard, a larger bed, or a median like ours.
